The Best Magick Tips for Witches (Beginner to Expert!)

Last Updated on September 16, 2026

Happy fall season witches! It’s always a good time for magic but for obvious reasons, the fall season always makes me feel extra witchy.

That means watching favorite spooky movies (like Practical Magic!), tracking down a pumpkin spice latte (not so easy in Germany) and setting new goals. (For me that always aligns with the beginning of the school year, even though I’m no longer in school.)

But more importantly, it’s about a return to magick, after the fun easy-breezy summer months. However, that doesn’t mean spending a ton of money on supplies or drafting out a complicated new ritual.

The truth about magic is that it’s rarely as big or glamorous as you might first think.

Many people come into the practice because of a heartache or wanting their crush to finally see them in kind.

But the most common uses for magic are much more mundane. Think: finding your keys, protecting your peace, or making your house a safe space.

Recently, I read a bunch of witch tips on Threads and it got me thinking about all the most common—but powerful—ways to use magic in your life. And I thought, why not round them all up and make it a resource we can all come back to?

Whether you’re a baby witch or a seasoned practitioner, I hope there’s a tip or two in here to help you in your magical practice.

Some of these tips are old personal favorites while others are new to me (and probably to you too). So whether you’re brand new to the craft or a well-seasoned practitioner, here’s a little extra magic to liven up your practice.

The Best Magick Tips for Witches

Protection Magick: Wards, Jars, and Boundaries

By far, the thing I personally use magic for the most is protection—and that seems to be the case for the witchy community at large. Keeping other energies out of your space and keeping your energy in should be your top energetic priority. It’s also something you should be doing daily or at least, whenever you feel energetically drained.

While not nearly as provactive as hexing an ex, protection work is foundational to everyone’s practice. Here are some powerful tips:

  • Warding your name so that anyone who uses it negatively redirects that energy back as abundance. More on how to do that in the next tip.
  • Creating a protection jar for any high-stakes situation (like custody battles or legal disputes).
  • Scattering herbs at the threshold of your home. You can use cinnamon, salt, or bundles of protective herbs at your doors and windows to keep out both unwanted people and unwanted energy.
  • Create a sphere of good energy around yourself before leaving the house or when you have to have an encounter with someone you don’t trust or like. Simply imagine a bubble of white (or any color you like) surrounding you like an extra-protective layer.
  • Create a car bubble. Visualizing a protective bubble around your vehicle before driving — one person credits it with decades of accident-free travel.

Warding Your Name

Warding your name is casting a spell so that when other people say your name or talk about you a specific action happens. It’s a way of taking the bad energy of gossip or the evil eye (whether intentional or not) and transforming that energy into something useful for you.

To do it, take a piece of paper and write your full name on it.

Then draw a circle all the way around your name, to symbolize a protective barrier.

Now set your intention, whether that’s for blessings, abundance, protection or whatever else you need. Hold your hands over the paper and say a short affirmative phrase about your intention out loud. For example, “Every time someone talks about me, abundance comes to me.” (I like to say it three times but once will do.)

Seal your ward by folding the paper toward you three times.

Then store your warded name, either someplace important (on your altar or under a candle) or somewhere you keep nearby (inside your phone case or wallet).

Energy Clearing

  • Regularly energy cleansing your space.
  • Imagining unwanted or negative energy rinsing off of you and going down the shower drain.
  • Stomping your feet to release negative energy into the ground.

Talk to Everything (Even the Spiders)

One of the most powerful tips isn’t a spell at all . It’s simply a mindset. Practitioners describe treating their homes, gardens, and even the wildlife around them as living, responsive beings.

Creating a relationship with the nature elements in your world is a beautiful spiritual practice on its own. But it can also come in clutch if you ever need help with something. (And don’t we all need a little help once in a while!)

  • Talk to the trees in your yard or neighborhood. Naming a favorite tree, hugging it, or asking it to hold onto grief, wishes, or even lost pets is one of the single most common practices in the whole collection. Some people just say hello while others have full on conversations. You might also try leaving offerings (like incense) to show your appreciation.
  • Spiders and bugs. Politely ask them to relocate their webs or move along, and many report the request being “honored” within a day.
  • Water. Talking to rivers, oceans, rain, and the moon shows up constantly, usually paired with a warning to be careful what you ask for.
  • Wind. Tell it what you want to take away from you and tell it some random things to bring to someone else (a magical push it forward).
  • Just offer thanks. Thank the trees for shade, thank the air for letting you breathe, etc.

The idea is to treat your environment as a relationship you can nurture, not just a resource to extract from.

Money Magick: Small, Specific, and Grateful

The money-drawing rituals in this collection lean toward simplicity over spectacle:

  • Bill under the pillow. Slip a bill into a plastic sleeve, sleep on it, and ask for a specific amount.
  • Money on glass. Write a modest dollar amount on a glass of water and then drink the water. However, the advice is consistently to ask for less than you think you deserve, not more. (As I always say, don’t ask for one million dollars.)
  • Give gratitude. Thank the universe out loud every time you find a coin, even a penny.
  • Create a money bowl with an intention of what you want to receive with some symbols of money, abundance and luck. Refresh when you need an extra boost.
  • Use grateful language. Repeating affirmations like “money flows to me easily” during ordinary tasks (washing dishes, doing hair) is a recurring favorite.
  • Write the amount of money you wish to receive on a bay leaf and put it in your wallet.

The Magick of Intentional Living

Simply setting an intention for your day or for a certain activity is so simple. Yet most people never do this! (Including myself many times.) But just think for a second on how powerful it is to know what you want to happen your day or during a specific interaction. Most people are running on autopilot and never even think to do this. So wherever you can, add a little extra intentionality to your life and just watch what happens.

You can also do this by writing intentions in your journal, stirring intentions into your coffee or food, or simply saying it aloud (or thinking it).

Glamour Magick

Glamour magick is the art of making yourself more attractive through magical practice. While we’re out there setting intentions for how our day goes, why not set an intention to be perceived as being more attractive or magnetic?

  • Try drawing a sigil on your face with an empty make-up brush.
  • Or put that intention into the make-up itself before you put it on your face.
  • Charge a bottle of rose water with magical intentions and use it a s a finishing spray.
  • Charge your perfume with an intention before you put it on.

Home Magick

Your home is your personal magic castle! Here are some powerful tips to keep it that way.

  • Give your home a name and/or create your own “House Fairy/Spirit”. In magical terms, this is essentially creating an egregore: a mind-created spirit that you can now interact with or assign tasks to. For example, protection, abundance or finding something that’s lost.

Love Magick

Caveat: many witches say don’t bother with a love spell! You will just make more trouble for yourself than its worth. However, love spells are still the most popular request around here so here you go.

  • Put a drop of vanilla in the four corners of your bedroom.
  • Bake cookies while sending your desire for attraction or love into them during the baking process. Then feed them to the person you want to sweeten up to you!
  • Candle magick. Carve the person’s name into a pink candle and then burn it. Or carve the word love into it if you don’t have a specific target.

Finding Lost Things

If you lost something in your home, ask your house spirit to give it back to you.

  • Ask a tree. Give it some offerings and ask for its help.
  • Ask your House Spirit to bring it back.
  • Visualize a silver cord around the missing object and imagine the object being pulled back to you. You can chant something like “Missing X come back to me.” while you do this.
  • Just clear out your mind and ask for some guidance on where your lost object might be. Notice whatever comes up whether it’s a word, an image, or even a smell.

Banishing

Sometimes you just need to give a person or situation the boot from your life permanently! Just use these with caution, and only in situations where you really want someone gone. (For example, not just because you’re upset they didn’t text you back and you secretly still want them to.)

Here are a few banishing spells to try out:

  • Simply speak out your intention for the person or situation to leave your life, trusting that it will be done.
  • The Freezer Spell. More on that next!
  • Write their name on a piece of paper and flush it down the toilet or throw it into a body of moving water.

The Infamous Freezer Spell

No list of community favorites is complete without the freezer spell, which might be the single most-repeated technique in the entire collection.

Here’s the basic Freezer Spell method:

  • Write down the person’s full name. (Or use whatever you call them.)
  • Then fold the paper away from you three times.
  • Put the paper in a small plastic baggie, ice cube tray or some other small container.
  • Fill it with water. Some people also like to add something like pepper or cinnamon for extra kick.
  • Then freeze it! And you’re done.

The Freezer Spell is perfect for difficult coworkers, bullies, and toxic exes. Ultimately, this is a binding spell which is meant to keep someone away. It’s not a hex for causing harm.

Bay Leaves: The Community’s Favorite Tool

If there’s an MVP ingredient in this whole collection, it’s the humble bay leaf. One of the most popular and powerful spells is simply writing an intention on one and then burning it. This works for new jobs, financial windfalls, love or basically anything else you could think of.

Manifestation Through Everyday Ritual

I always say manifestation is simply magick and minimalism. You can easily reframe “spellwork” as something you can weave into daily life rather than a separate practice:

  • Speaking intentions into your drinks. Just what it sounds like: whispering intentions into coffee, tea, or water before drinking it.
  • Vision boards and scripting. Write out exactly what you want, often on a new or full moon.
  • Affirmation loops. Just repeat a single phrase like “everything works out for me” consistently over weeks. Make it rhyme or set it to the tempo of a famous nursery rhyme to make it more “catchy” to your subconscious mind.
  • Sigils. Draw them discreetly and place them somewhere relevant to your intention.

A Few Magickal Ground Rules

Across hundreds of stories, some consistent “best practices” emerge:

  1. Specificity matters. Vague wishes get vague (or unexpectedly literal) results. I’ve heard several cautionary tales involve wording that backfired. (For example, wishing to not go to work anymore and your car breaks down. Very funny Universe!)
  2. Intention and belief are more important than materials. More than one person points out that the herbs and candles are optional. And you definitely don’t need fancy witch shop supplies! Your focus and your actions are what counts.
  3. Gratitude is essential. Always! Thanking whatever you’re working with (spirits, nature, the universe) is treated as essential, not a nicety.

Have Fun & Blessed Be!

Your magick spells can be elaborately planned rituals. But they can also be simple and easy to do on a daily basis. You don’t have to choose one or the other! In fact, the more you spend in magickal practice, the easier the whole thing gets. Don’t be afraid to use your magick to ask for help with every day matters, like finding something that’s lost or securing a park spot.

In magick, intention, consistency, and gratitude count the most. So keep that in mind and have some fun with your practice!
