13 Magick Rituals for Halloween (Samhain)

Last Updated on January 16, 2026

Halloween (or Samhain as it’s known in ancient Celtic tradition) is more than just a night for costumes and candy. It’s considered one of the most magically potent nights of the year, when the veil between worlds grows thin and mystical energies reach their peak.

As a Scorpio, this is absolutely my favorite holiday. But for some reason, I’ve never written a guide about how to celebrate Halloween before!

Whether you’re a seasoned witchcraft practitioner or simply curious about adding a little magic to your normal Halloween routine, these thirteen rituals will help you harness the enchantment of All Hallows’ Eve.

The History of Halloween

Halloween traces its roots back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced “sow-win”), celebrated around November 1st in what is now Ireland, Scotland, and other Celtic regions. The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the living world and the realm of the dead grew thin, allowing spirits to cross over.

This was mostly a time to honor the dead, rather than a time for evil to run loose. However, superstitions were strong. Bonfires were lit to ward off harmful entities, and people wore costumes (often animal skins and heads) to hide themselves from wandering ghosts.

When Christianity spread through Celtic lands, the church incorporated these traditions into All Hallows’ Eve, the night before All Saints’ Day. (Christianity has taken many symbols from paganism!)

Halloween (Samhain) and Magick

In modern witchcraft and magick, Samhain remains one of the most spiritually potent times of the year. Magickal or pagan practitioners see this date as an ideal moment for divination, ancestral communion, and reflection on the cycle of death and rebirth.

The thinning veil makes it easier to communicate with spirits and receive messages from the other side, whether through tarot readings, scrying, or meditative practices. Many witches honor their ancestors on this night, setting up altars with photographs, favorite foods, and candles to welcome their spirits home.

Halloween is also considered a powerful time for releasing what no longer serves you: old patterns, relationships, or energies. This moment echoes nature’s own process of decay and dormancy as leaves fall and winter approaches. The symbolism of darkness, transformation, and the mysteries beyond death make Halloween a sacred sabbat for those who walk magical paths.

13 Magickal Rituals To Celebrate Halloween (Samhain)

1. The Ancestor Altar

The most classic way to celebrate Halloween is by honoring deceased relatives, ancestors, and loved ones. To do this, create an altar or sacred space to remember your people, whether they passed during the last year or long ago.

Find a few tokens that evoke their memory. Set out some photographs, heirlooms, and offerings of food and drink. (Bonus points for setting out things they loved during their life!) Then light a few white or purple candles, and spend time sharing memories, asking for guidance, or simply sitting in reverent silence.

This is the night when communication with the other side flows most freely. Don’t be afraid to reach out and say “hello”!

2. The Silent Supper

Similarly, you can also “host” your deceased loved ones for dinner. At its most basic, that means setting out an extra plate for whoever you want to honor. However, you can also take this to the next level by hosting a “dumb supper” where participants eat in complete silence, next to their deceased guests.

Always serve the spirit plate first, offering food and drink to those in the spirit world. The silence creates space for messages and signs from beyond to come through more clearly.

3. Reflect On The Death Tarot Card

Western society has a rather f*cked up relationship to death. But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s just a normal part of life. Halloween is a great time to check in with your own relationship to death.

Use the Death Tarot card as a focus for your attention while you contemplate the greatest mystery of life. What emotions come up? What fears? Facing something that we usually ignore can be intense at first, but try to come to a place of peace and understanding.

4. The Protection Spell

Samhain is a time for all spirits to communicate and come through, so it’s also a great time for spiritual proection. Here are a few simple protection spells to try out:

  • Dress one black candle and one white candle in patchouli oil. (White is for purity and black is for protection.) Light them both at the same time.
  • Wash your front door and threshold with salt water to create a strong boundary between you and the outside.
  • Visualize yourself surrounded by white light and set the intention for any energy that is not yours to be respectfully released.

5. Candle Scrying

Scrying is a simple form of fortunetelling—and it’s easier than you think! Light a candle in a darkened room. Let your gaze soften as you stare at the flame, letting your vision blur slightly. (Basically, you’re letting yourself enter a hypnotic state!)

Then watch for images, symbols, or movements in the flame. Keep an eye on the way the candle burns. Steady, flickering, or smoking flames can reveal different messages about the year to come.

6. The Releasing Ritual

Samhain is about ending cycles. So a great question to ask yourself is “What can I say goodbye to right now?”

Then turn it into a mini-ritual. Write down everything you wish to release: bad habits, toxic relationships, and limiting beliefs. Then release them by burning the papers, one by one. (Always use a fireproof bowl or do it over the sink!) As each paper burns, state aloud: “I release this and reclaim my power.” Let the ashes cool, then scatter them to the wind.

7. Tarot Reading

Intuition is heightened right now, so why not use this moment as a chance to get some extra guidance? Do a simple tarot card spread for yourself, focusing on the end of the year or the entire year ahead of you. You can also ask the cards for guidance on what to release, what to nurture over the next few months, or on ancestral wisdom.

The insights gained on Halloween night carry particular weight and clarity. If you don’t read cards yourself, it’s a great time to book a professional!

8. The Crossroads Offering

Samhain is also a great time to work with deities. So might I suggest the mighty Hecate? She is the goddess of witchcraft, the night, and the crossroads (a symbol of the threshold between human and spiritual worlds).

To start communicating with her is simple: leave an offering of coins, wine or bread at a crossroads, while asking for her guidance and protection through the coming winter months. (Do this at midnight for extra magickal oomph!) When you’re finished, walk away without looking back.

9. Dress Up

During Medieval times, costumes were popular at Samhain as a form of protection. Hiding your true identity was a way to deter ghosts or negative spiritual energy. (This is also why people began carving faces into pumpkins!) So indulge in the spirit and express your true self this Halloween!

10. Offer Something Sweet

Halloween might be associated with candy these days but the tradition actually started during Medieval times. In Medieval England, when Samhain merged with All Saints Day, soul cakes were given out to “soulers” who went door-to-door. (An early version of trick-or-treating!)

Indulge in something sweet yourself or bake up a treat to offer some loved ones. You can also leave out a few offerings on your altar or as a “gift” to departed family members, pets, or ancestors.

11. Brew a Magical Tea

Drinking tea is a simple way to incorporate magic into your life! Tea naturally has medicinal and magical properties, so it’s easy to use for your own purposes.

Try blending a special Halloween tea from ingredients like mugwort (for psychic visions), cinnamon (for prosperity), star anise (for luck), and orange peel (for joy). As you let the tea steep, hold the cup and concentrate on infusing the tea with your intentions. Then drink it slowly while meditating on what you wish to manifest in the coming year.

12. The Saging/Smoke Cleansing

I love a good energy cleanse and I invite you to make this part of your normal weekly routine. But Samhain also offers us an extra opportunity for smoke cleansing.

To do this, simply around your home with burning sage, palo santo or cedar. Set the intention of clearing out any energy that doesn’t belong to you. Be sure to pay special attention to doorways, windows, and corners where stagnant energy tends to collect. Crack open a window while you work in order to let old or negative energy room to leave. This is the perfect way to say goodbye to the old and create space for something new.

13. The Midnight Manifestation

At the stroke of midnight on Halloween, stand outside under the moon. (Yes, you can do this even if it’s cloudy or if it’s a new moon! The power of the moon is still strong). Hold a piece of paper with your deepest wish written upon it. Speak your desire aloud three times, then fold the paper and keep it on your altar or in a special place. The wish spoken at the year’s most magical moment carries extraordinary power.
