Have you ever heard someone talk about a “spiritual awakening” and wondered what it means? Or maybe you have a sneaking suspicion you’re going through one right now.

Welcome to the club my dear! You’re not alone. A spiritual awakening is a common experience, whether you were previously spiritual or not.

However, it can also be dark and confusing. While these experiences are often portrayed in media as blissful moments of enlightenment, the reality can be more complex. Let’s just say things can get a bit rocky on this journey.

If you’re looking for a little extra guidance for your spiritual awakening, you’re in the right place! Let’s get into it.

What is a Spiritual Awakening?

A spiritual awakening is a profound transformation of consciousness. It’s a shift from a limited, ego-centric perspective to a broader, more interconnected worldview.

Spiritual awakenings are profound shifts in consciousness. It’s like waking up from a dream and seeing the world with fresh eyes. You might feel a deeper connection to yourself, others, and the universe. Many people describe a renewed sense of purpose and a questioning of their previously held beliefs.

For me, it was more a matter of leaning back into my old intuitive way of doing things (which I’d stopped for quite a while). However, ultimately this desire led me to even more purpose, and wisdom.

Signs You Might Be Having a Spiritual Awakening

While it can be a deeply personal and unique experience, there are common signs and symptoms that many people recognize.

  • You want to be alone. It’s common to be overwhelmed by other people’s energy or to simply crave some solitude to process your experiences and newfound awareness.
  • You experience energy shifts. Up one day and down the next? It’s nothing to worry about! Fluctuations in energy levels are common, as your body adjusts to the change.
  • You’re an emotional rollercoaster. Perhaps you were formerly a tough little cookie but now TV commercials make you cry. And that’s okay! Expect some emotional ups and downs as you navigate this transformative journey.
  • You have heightened sensitivity. Maybe you can’t handle loud music or big crowds like you used to. This can simply be a sign that you’re more attuned to your emotions, other people’s emotions and the energy around you.
  • You have physical symptoms. Headaches, fatigue, and other physical changes can occur. Remember, these (and all other symptoms) are temporary.
  • You have big existential questions. You might find yourself pondering the meaning of life, the nature of reality, and your purpose.
  • You have increased intuition and synchronicity. You might experience heightened intuition and notice meaningful coincidences or synchronicities.
  • You lose interest in material possessions or typical signs of success. Focusing on your inner world might have the side effect of making you a whole lot less concerned with the stereotypical signs of wealth or success.
  • You feel lonely or disconnected. You may feel disconnected from your old self and the world around you.

Keep in mind this is not an exhaustive list! So don’t be alarmed if your symptoms don’t match. The biggest indicator of all is your own gut feeling.

How To Survive Your Spiritual Awakening: 5 Tips

A spiritual awakening can be both exhilarating and challenging. Here are some tips to help you navigate this transformative process:

Tip #1: Let Go Of Your Expectations

Your beliefs and identity were created in another era! Having a spiritual awakening means it’s time for an upgrade. However, just know that your ego will be holding onto that past version of you as long as it can. It identifies threats to your ego identity as threats to your very survival.

While easier said than done, try to let yourself move into your new era without resistance. That means questioning everything: who you are, how you see the world, and whether or not you want to keep believing these things. While you’ve been operating out of habit in the past, now is the time to embrace your Conscious Creator power.

Tip #2: Trust Yourself

There’s no manual for surviving a spiritual awakening. In fact, everyone’s experience is totally unique. However, that means it’s mostly up to you to figure it out as you go. In practical terms, that means learning to trust yourself.

Stop looking outside of yourself for guidance or knowledge. Learn how to lean into your own innate wisdom and intuition first. That’s not to say you can’t learn from spiritual teachers. Just be cautious not to take in everything they say at face value. And definitely don’t go putting anyone on the guru pedestal! Become your own guru instead.

Tip #3: Trust Your Intuition

We already talked about trusting yourself, but it’s also important to learn how to trust your intuition at this time. In fact, I believe heightened intuition is one of the biggest gifts from a spiritual awakening. Even if you didn’t think of yourself as intuitive before, try to make intuition a part of your daily practice and use it wherever you can.

Remember, it’s just like a muscle! You can strengthen it with practice. It might take some time to feel more comfortable with it but it will happen.

Tip #4: Find Support

A spiritual awakening can be a downright lonely experience. You might suddenly feel like you have nothing in common with your old friend group.

However, much of our power comes from our community. Any shame you might have from this experience heals when we can share it with a supportive audience.

If you can, try to seek out new spiritually-minded friends. At the very least, find people who are supportive and open, even if they’re not on the exact journey as you. If that’s not possible in your real world, find a community online that can do the same.

And if you have the need to self-isolate for a while that’s okay too! Just be sure to come out of it when you’re ready.

Tip #5: Take Care Of Your Body and Mind

While a spiritual awakening is a spiritual event, it can also be physically exhausting. While self-care should always be a priority, make sure you’re doing everything you can to support yourself right now. For example: get enough sleep, eat well, and prioritize your exercise or meditation routines. Be gentle with yourself and let yourself cry, nap, or do whatever else your body needs to do without judgment.

Note: If you’re feeling overwhelmed or you’re struggling with intense emotions, please reach out to a therapist or counsellor.

Spiritual Awakening Tips

There’s No one Right Way To Do It

Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. Your experience will always be uniquely yours and there is no one right way. So don’t let anyone else tell you how you should be feeling or thinking right now. It’s simply not their business.

But most importantly, don’t judge yourself! If you find yourself making comparisons or “should”-ing yourself, try to cultivate some acceptance and compassion. As a human, you’re literally designed to figure it out as you go. Cut yourself some slack!

Don’t Rush

As humans, we want to feel certain about who we are and what our life will look like. A spiritual awakening challenges all of that. It might make you want to hurry up in order to figure everything out so you can go back to feeling secure again. However, spiritual experiences can’t be rushed! Don’t push yourself to feel done. Instead, try to embrace the uncertainty with a sense of adventure. After all, you’re meeting the new you every single day and that’s pretty cool, isn’t it?

Let Yourself Feel The Darkness

No matter what, spiritual awakenings are never just sunshine and roses. Sometimes you find your spiritual awakening after a major life event. Other times your spiritual experience makes you question everything and brings up plenty of darkness along the way.

Don’t look at your heavy or “negative” emotions as punishment or as a sign that things have gone wrong. Remember, these things are just a natural part of being human and every emotion has something to teach you. In other words, don’t be afraid to feel your feelings! In fact, feeling them is exactly what you’re meant to do.

Let Yourself explore

Now is the right time to open yourself up to new ideas and experiences. If you’ve been meaning to work with a certain coach, read a certain book, or try Reiki healing (just an example), then go for it! Trust that your curiosity and intuition are on the right path. Even if you try something and it doesn’t resonate, it will help lead you to what does work.

When I first moved to Berlin I was very much in this stage! That led me to a lot of experiences like getting a hug from Amma, doing kundalini yoga with Guru Jagat and seeing Damien Wynne. And PS, there’s no need to be so serious about any of this. Try to have fun and play with these new experiences.

Spiritual Awakening | Final Thoughts

Even though it might be scary or lonely at times, a spiritual awakening is a beautiful and transformative experience. By understanding the signs, embracing the process, and seeking support, you can navigate this journey with ease.
